Reviewing Graywind's motorised blinds for my home office

Reviewing Graywind's motorised blinds for my home office

The article is reprinted from: Dream of Home Author: SARAH MACKLIN Release date: August 4, 2024 AD – these blinds were gifted in return for an honest review. Our home office has had a lot of a makeover since we first moved into our house in August 2020. The blue carpets (that matched the blue blinds) really did the shelving no favours, and all that wood. The only photo I have of the true blue of the carpet and the blue blinds This estate agent photo makes the room look smaller than it is, but you get the vibe. I love all the storage we have in here, including built-in filing cabinets, cupboards and shelves. But I knew I wanted to do something with the shelves, and do something I did. In 2021, I painted all the built-in shelves black. At the time I felt like it was a brave move, but it feels so right in the room and even 4 years later, there’s no chips or scratches. It took far more work than I ever imagined, hours and hours. It needed four coats because I was going such a dark colour, and my hands had blisters, my soul was crying and it probably took me 24 hours (spread over a couple of weeks) to finish it. But this was the finished result: But what was still the one thing that let the office down? Those blue blinds. So we ripped them out a few weeks ago with no replacement in mind, and that was when Graywind messaged me, like an angel sent down from heaven. I've recently set up my own copywriting and content strategy business, so I needed my home office to have the perfect set up. We were unsure of colours and styles, so we ordered a collection of samples first, which showed us the colour, texture, and shading level before we committed to ordering. I chose their electric day and night blinds, in the colour white. I didn't need a blind that offered complete darkness, but one that could block out the sun in the afternoon while still letting light in, and these were absolutely perfect for that. We took all the necessary measurements and also decided on some extras (mount, motor, remote control, etc). Because these blinds are motorised, there was a lot of options, such as an Alexa motor (powered by Alexa), a smart motor (works with Alexa and/or Google), a hardwired motor or a chargeable battery motor. With it being a home office, we chose the battery motor which needs to be charged approximately every six months. Installing our Graywind motorised blinds  The packaging was perfect and everything was really neatly packed and protected. We took the blinds and all the accessories out of the box, and quickly realised the blind didn't quite fit. Not Graywind's fault – we hadn't taken into account the window sealant/edging that jutted out about 1.5cm on each side. Plus the walls were bowed which also didn't help! So the job got a little messier than anticipated. We screwed the mounting brackets directly into the window frame, which was the un-messy part. That was when we realised the blind didn't fit. So cue the scraper to chip away at some of the walls and the window edging. The remote control that came with our Graywind blinds While the window now needs some filling and repainting, I couldn’t be happier with how the blinds fit and look. You can slightly see in the top left of the window frame where we've had to chip away and the paint and some of the wall.  I love how subtle they are. You almost don't really notice them and they really blend in, even when they’re down. Setting up and programming our motorised blinds The blinds came with a really handy booklet that explained how to programme the blinds, which I definitely needed. First, after you've installed the blinds, you need to charge the motor/battery for around 8 hours. When I realised the blinds need charging, I started to wonder whether we'd made a mistake. I didn't want a cable hanging across the room for hours every day. But actually, they need charging about once every few months! This is great news and means we can charge them overnight so they’re ready to go as normal the next morning. I'm so glad we did go for the motorised blinds, as I hadn't realised all their features. Not only can you use the button to lift the blinds up and down as needed, but you can actually set them on a timer, so if the sun shines through at the same time every day or you’re going on holiday, your blinds will go up and down to the times you set.  The blinds are advertised as‘80%’blackout. I would argue that they are less than this, but I didn't need the blackout feature for my office, when I’ll be working in there in the day and need as much light as I can get. So to review, I would absolutely purchase blinds from Graywind again. The packaging and delivery were excellent, the blinds themselves are exactly what we were after, and the fact they're motorised is a bonus.

Smart Solar Shades: Eco-Friendly Innovation for Modern Homes

In today's world, where sustainability and smart home technology go hand in hand, smart solar-powered shades have emerged as an innovative solution for energy efficiency, convenience, and modern design. These shades combine automation, solar energy, and eco-friendly materials to create a seamless window treatment that enhances comfort while reducing environmental impact. But how do solar-powered shades work? What are their benefits? And why should you choose Graywind's solar-powered shades? Let's explore. What Are Smart Solar-Powered Shades? Solar-powered smart shades are motorized window coverings that operate using energy harnessed from the sun. They feature a built-in or attachable solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity, powering the motor that opens and closes the shades. Unlike traditional motorized shades that rely on batteries or electrical wiring, solar shades eliminate the need for frequent battery replacements or complex installations. They integrate with smart home systems, allowing users to control them via voice commands, smartphone apps, or automated schedules. How Do Solar-Powered Shades Work? Solar shades operate on a simple yet effective mechanism that harnesses the power of the sun to function, while also providing optimal light and heat control. ✔Solar Panel Absorption – The attached solar panel captures sunlight and converts it into electrical energy. ✔Power Storage – Excess energy is stored in a rechargeable battery, ensuring operation even on cloudy days. ✔Motorized Operation – The stored energy powers the motor, enabling smooth, automated adjustments. ✔Smart Control – Users can set schedules, adjust shades remotely, or integrate them with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit. Do Solar Panels Work in the Shade or Winter? While direct sunlight maximizes efficiency, modern solar panels can still generate power in low-light conditions. It is recommended to plug it in. If there is no charging port nearby, use an extension cord to charge it to ensure the operation of the shades. Key Benefits of Solar Shades Energy Efficiency & Cost Savings No electricity dependency – Powered entirely by solar energy. Reduces HVAC load – Blocks heat in summer and retains warmth in winter, cutting energy bills. UV Protection & Glare Reduction High-quality solar shades block 95% of UV rays, protecting furniture from fading while maintaining outdoor visibility. Smart Home Integration Schedule-based adjustments (e.g., opening at sunrise, closing at sunset). Voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. Remote operation from anywhere via smartphone. Durability & Low Maintenance Fireproof, waterproof, and dust-resistant – Ideal for high-traffic areas. Valance & designed bottom bar for a sleek, customized look. Eco-Friendly Choice Reduces carbon footprint by utilizing renewable energy. Long-lasting battery life – No frequent replacements needed. Advantages of Solar Products ✔Renewable energy source The sun is an abundant and inexhaustible source of energy, ensuring that solar products can be powered for years to come without depleting natural resources. ✔Versatility Solar technology can be integrated into various products, from shades and lights to water heaters and chargers, making it a versatile solution for different household needs. ✔Government incentives In many regions, there are government incentives, tax credits, or rebates available for installing solar products, which can help offset the initial cost. ✔Increased property value Homes equipped with solar products are often more attractive to potential buyers, as they offer long-term energy savings and environmental benefits, which can increase the overall value of the property. While professional installation is available, many homeowners prefer the cost savings and satisfaction of DIY installation. This comprehensive guide covers everything from preparation to troubleshooting, with special tips for beginners and renters who prefer no-drill options. Tools You'll Need for Installation Before starting, gather these essentials: Tool Purpose Alternative Options Measuring tape Precise window measurements Laser measure Drill & bits Secure mounting brackets Adhesive mounts (no-drill) Level Ensure straight installation Smartphone level app Screwdriver set Tighten bracket screws Power drill attachment Pencil Mark bracket positions Washable marker Step ladder Reach high windows safely Sturdy chair (with caution) Step-by-Step Installation Guide Step 1:Mounting the Brackets Mark bracket positions with a pencil, using a level to ensure straight alignment. Pre-drill holes (prevents splitting in wood and makes screwing easier). Secure brackets with screws (use wall anchors if not drilling into studs). Step 2:Attaching the Headrail Slide the headrail into the brackets. Lock it in place (some models have a click-lock mechanism). Step 3:Connecting the Motor Insert the motor into the headrail (some blinds come pre-installed). Plug in the power adapter or insert batteries. Step 4:Testing & Calibration Operate the blinds manually first to ensure smooth movement. Sync with the remote/app and test automation features. 7 Expert Installation Tips ✔Timing MattersInstall during daylight to see alignment clearly, but test operation at night to check light gaps. ✔The Paper TrickTape paper templates to window before drilling to visualize coverage. ✔Cable ManagementUse paintable cord covers for powered models needing outlets. ✔Group Control SetupProgram all window blinds in a room as one group in the app. ✔Battery MaintenanceReplace all batteries simultaneously to prevent uneven power drain. ✔Child SafetyEnable auto-reverse feature testing by placing a roll of paper towels in the path. ✔Seasonal AdjustmentsReprogram summer/winter schedules for optimal energy efficiency. Common Installation Q&A Q:Measurement tool recommendation. A:Ruler (vernier caliper, tape measure), app measurement, light ranging、paper. Q:Do I need to leave a security gap? A:①For inside mount, please choose the actual width of window frame and we will automatically deduct the safety gap. ②For outside mount, It is recommended that the width and height of small-size blinds be increased by more than 3''. For large-size blinds such as curtains, the size you choose is the size of our products. Q:How do I choose the outside and inside mount? A:①According to the depth of the window, each window requires a different size. ②It depends on individual needs, and the inside mount takes up less space and is more concise. The outside mount is better for shading. Q:How to measure outside mount? A:Outside mount depends on how much coverage you want. Using triangulation or other methods to measure the width and height, it is recommended to add at least 3'' extra. Q:How to measure inside mount? A:The width, depth, and height are measured three times along the window frame (up, middle, and down), taking the lowest value. Graywind blinds can set a lower limit, even if the measured height exceeds, it will not exceed the window frame. Q:How to explain Width Fraction?A:For example, if the width is 50 1/2 ", choose 50 "for the width row and 1/2" for the width fraction.
